Senior Iranian navy commander says that the country will launch its first destroyer in Caspian Sea in the near future.

The home-made destroyer dubbed "Damavand" will join Iranian naval fleet in the Caspian Sea during the current Iranian calendar year (started on March 21), commander of the Army's 4th Naval Zone Admiral Khordad Hakimi said, the country's IRNA news agency reported on April 15.

He didn't reveal any further details on the specifications of the destroyer and the exact date of its launch.

The production of Damavand started in 2010, according to the Iranian media outlets.

When completed, it will have the ability to carry helicopters, anti-ship missiles, surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes, modern guns and air defence guns.

The ship will also be equipped with electronic warfare devices.

Iranian officials say that the country is upgrading its warfare capabilities in the Caspian Sea in a bid to maintain peace and security along its coastal waters in the North.
