BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. As part of COP29 in Baku, Trend News Agency proudly presents COP for Hope, a special project offering an unparalleled platform to hear from world leaders and trailblazers in politics, economics, science, and ecology, all united by a shared commitment to addressing today’s pressing climate challenges.
In an exclusive interview with Trend News Agency, a representative of the Center for Support of Indigenous Peoples of the North arrived from Russia - Radun Sulen Zigua said that COP29 is the best international event he has attended.
Zigua also said that he has already participated in more than 10 high-level international conferences.
"I believe COP29 is the best of them all," he pointed out.
Expressing satisfaction with his stay in Baku, Zigua highlighted his high expectations for COP29.
"This COP can also be referred to as an event of financing. Finance is just a tool. We must use it effectively in line with the principles and rights of humanity," he said.
Zigua emphasized the need for global efforts to protect nature and the environment.
"All the commitments made by countries to prevent and combat climate change must be upheld. But of course, we need the full political will of the member states," he stressed.
He also noted that, due to the importance of the ongoing events at COP29, he had not yet had the chance to explore Baku's landmarks.
"I haven't had the opportunity to stroll around Baku because of the limited time, but I especially wanted to visit the historical places of this city," he added.
The opening ceremony of the much-anticipated COP29 conference has kicked off on November 11 at the Baku Olympic Stadium.
Representatives, leaders, and climate experts from around the globe gathered to mark the beginning of what is set to be one of the largest climate events of the year.
The decision to host COP29 in Azerbaijan was made at the COP28 plenary session held in Dubai on December 11 of last year.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed in June 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, aims to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. The “COP” (Conference of the Parties) is the highest governing body responsible for overseeing the convention’s implementation.
A total of 198 countries participate in the convention. Unless otherwise agreed, COP is held annually. The first COP took place in Berlin in March 1995, with its secretariat headquartered in Bonn.
