Azerbaijan likely to be key in creation of regional power grid - Iran's energy minister

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 22. Azerbaijan can form a strong electricity network in the region by playing a role in uniting Iran's and Russia's electricity ties, Iranian Energy Minister Abbas Aliabadi said at a meeting with Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev in Tehran on January 21, Trend reports.

According to him, the Russian and Iranian sides express readiness to establish an electricity interconnection. Azerbaijan can also play a key role in establishing these relations.

The Iranian minister noted that the development of electricity exchange infrastructure between Iran and Azerbaijan can be the focus of attention. In this direction, Iran is ready to import electricity from Azerbaijan and supply it to Nakhchivan instead.

Aliabadi remarked that with the commissioning of the Maiden (Giz Galasi) Hydroelectric Power Plant on the Araz River between Iran and Azerbaijan, the acceleration of the modernization process of the Maiden Hydroelectric Power Plant could be the focus of attention.

“The Ministry of Energy of Iran, in coordination with the country's environmental organization and in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan, is ready to conduct environmental studies on the construction and commissioning of Ordubad and Marazad reservoirs,” he noted.

To note, the two-day 16th session of the Iranian-Azerbaijani Joint Economic Commission in Tehran started on January 21.
