Constructive relationship with European countries depends on Iran: British FM

Azerbaijan, Baku, June 30 / Trend , T.Konyayeva/

Overcoming the current conflict between European countries and Iran, as well as building relations between these countries depends entirely on Iran, the British Foreign Ministry's official who asked to remain anonymous wrote to Trend in an email.

"We have always been clear that we seek a constructive bilateral relationship with Iran based on mutual respect.   Iran's decision to try to turn what are internal matters for Iran into a conflict with the UK - and others - is deeply regrettable and without foundation in fact," a source at the Foreign Ministry said.

Whether a constructive relationship is possible depends on Iran, he added.

The Iranian government continues to accuse the Western countries, particularly UK, of initiating the unrest and interference in the internal affairs of the country after the presidential elections on June 12, in which the incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won by gaining majority of votes.

During the conflict, Iran and the United Kingdom expelled two diplomats working in embassies of these countries. Eight Iranian officials of the British embassy were detained in Tehran with suspicion of involvement in the riots. A while ago, the Iranian authorities arrested several foreigners, including British citizens. Moreover, Iran has expelled the BBC correspondent in Tehran.
