BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 27. Iran is considering using several more gas fields as underground storage, Iranian Deputy Oil Minister and CEO of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), Mohsen Khojasteh Mehr said, Trend reports.

The CEO noted that NIOC has developed a program in this regard - it is planned to carry out proper research and excavation work at several gas fields.

“Currently, two gas fields of Iran - Sarajeh and Shourijeh - are used as underground storage facilities. About 3 billion cubic meters of gas have been pumped into these storages this year, and this gas will be used during winter,” Khojasteh Mehr said.

Sarajeh in Qom Province and Shourijeh D in Razavi Khorasan Province are underground gas storage facilities in Iran. They used to be gas fields, but when the gas production became unprofitable, the fields got converted into storages. For eight months, gas is injected into these storages, and later the same gas is extracted and used.
