BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 6. Hosting COP29 in Baku marks an important step for the world, Deputy Chairman of Türkish Constitutional Court Basri Bagci said during the Law and Climate International Conference in Baku today, Trend reports.
He emphasized that climate change is no walk in the park; it's a tough nut to crack for the future worldwide.
"Law is one of the most crucial tools in addressing issues related to climate and the environment. The Constitutional Court of Türkiye has made decisions on climate and environmental matters. We are fortunate to have the opportunity to bring these issues to light in Azerbaijan and hope that today's conference will conclude successfully," he added.
To note, the conference organizers are the Supreme Court of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan Union of Judges.
The participants include Ramiz Rzayev, Chairman of the Judges' Union, COP29 President and Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev, Chairman of the Supreme Court Inam Karimov, Ombudsperson of Azerbaijan Sabina Aliyeva, President of the International Association of Judges Duro Sessa, and other notable persons.
The event aims to catch the eye of the legal community to global processes related to climate change and to bring to light the existing tools for international and national legal regulation in this area.
The conference will feature discussions on topics such as "The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change: The Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement, Doha Amendment", "Climate Change and Human Rights: Challenges and Legal Regulation", "Specifics of Judicial Decision-Making in National and International Courts on Climate Disputes", and "The Role of Combating Environmental Crime in Achieving Climate Goals: International and National Contexts", and others.
This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP—the Conference of the Parties—is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin, with its secretariat in Bonn.
