Former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon's condition has deteriorated over the past days, Israeli media reported Wednesday, dpa reported.

Sharon, 85, who has been in a coma for the past eight years, suffered kidney malfunction, the reports said.

He had a massive stroke and suffered a brain haemorrhage on January 4, 2006, in the midst of a re-election campaign. He was a popular premier and was forecast to win the next elections at the head of the centrist Kadima party.

Sharon was prime minister from 2001 to 2006, and initiated Israel's unilateral pullout from the Gaza Strip in 2005.

About a month ago his condition destabilized and he underwent an emergency operation.
