Newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza said that his top priority as ambassador is pursuing a peaceful and just settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict. Bryza made this remark during a reception organized by the US-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce (USACC).

He also noted that he was focused on furthering the ties between the two countries, adding that Azerbaijan offers a wide array of opportunities and avenues of cooperation well beyond the oil and gas sector for which it is already known around the world, USACC website reported.

Two dozen USACC members along with Ambassador Bryza's family attended the private event at USACC offices in Georgetown. Ambassador Bryza said he was eager to arrive in Baku, which has been without a US ambassador for 18 months.

Matthew Bryza took his oath in Washington on Jan. 27, U.S. Embassy in Baku spokesman Keith Bean told Trend.

Azerbaijani Ambassador to the United States Yashar Aliyev attended the oath-taking ceremony.

It was previously reported that Bryza will arrive in Baku in early February.

The post of U.S. ambassador in Baku had been vacant since the previous ambassador, Anne Derse, completed her diplomatic mission in July 2009.
