The Azerbaijani people always protected the Georgian Constitution and respected the laws of this country, so they will never take unconstitutional measures, President of the Congress of Azerbaijanis in Georgia (CAG) Ali Babayev said before the meeting of the radical opposition in front of the Georgian parliament in Tbilisi.
Babayev said some citizens distribute proclamation amongst people at subway stations and argue that Azerbaijanis will hold a demonstration in Tbilisi on May 20 and will demand to announce the Azerbaijani language the state language of Georgia.
"This is a lie and one should not believe in these provocations," Babayev said. He said the government must arrest such provokers.
"Azerbaijanis in Georgia support our country's territorial integrity and we always supported and will support the Georgian nation and it is necessary to put an end to these provocations," he said.
On May 20, the National Assembly of the Azerbaijanis in Georgia intend to hold a demonstration before the parliament in Tbilisi and demand to announce the Azerbaijani language as the state language and launch the Azerbaijani-speaking TV to be aired in all territories of Georgia.
According to the Azerbaijani NGO's unofficial data, roughly 500,000 Azerbaijanis live in Georgia.
Azerbaijanis in Georgia complain of problems studying the state language and training in their mother tongue, receiving land and occupying senior positions in the government.
