By Demir Azizov- Trend:

Uzbekenergo State Joint Stock Company will complete the modernization of the energy infrastructure in the southwestern region of the country by the end of 2014, the company representative told Trend on March 25.

The project with the total cost of $ 48.2 million includes the modernization of power equipment in Kashkadarya, Bukhara and Navoi provinces, the company representative said.

The project is financed by Uzbekenrgo`s own funds.

As Trend reported, Uzbekistan started expansion of Talimarjan TPP with construction of two combined cycle gas turbines (CCGT) with a capacity of 450 megawatts in 2013. As a result, installed capacity will be increased to 1, 600 megawatts. With the introduction of two CCGT in 2016 electricity generation at thermal power plants will increase from 4.6 billion kWh to 10.4 billion kWh. At present, the rate of the coefficient of performance (COP) of the stations will increase from 38 percent to 58 percent.

The contract for construction was signed with the Korean consortium consisting of Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Daewoo International.

Project cost is $1.28 billion. Its funding is carried out at the expense of credits from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in the amount of $ 350 million, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) - $ 300 million, the Fund for Reconstruction and Development of Uzbekistan - $ 250 million and Uzbekenrgo equity.

It is expected that the implementation of the project on the expansion of the thermal power plants and modernization of the energy infrastructure will improve the energy supply of the south-western regions of the country, as well as increase the export potential of Uzbekistan.

Currently, the power system of Uzbekistan includes 45 power plants with total capacity of 12.4 megawatts.

The major share of electricity, up to 90 percent, is produced by 10 thermal power plants with total installed capacity of 10.6 megawatts.
In 2013, Uzbekistan increased production of electricity by 3.2 percent, up to 54.207 billion kilowatt / hours compared to 2012.
