A 26- year old woman charged with murder was hanged in Iran on Oct. 25 early morning, Tehran Prosecutor's Office said, Iranian ISNA news agency reported Oct. 25.

Reyhaneh Jabbari, who was arrested in 2007, was sentenced to death for murdering Morteza Abdolali Sarbandi, allegedly a former employee of Iran's ministry of intelligence.

Her execution was due to be carried out on September 30 but was postponed to convince the victim's family to forgive Jabbari.

According to the Iranian laws, the victim's nearest relative is entitled to take the life of the killer or forgive him/her if the court approves this.

Jabbari claimed that Sarbandi had tried to sexually assault her and she stabbed him in the back.

She also claimed that another man who was also in the house at that time killed him, however the court did accept these claims.

Iran ranks second, after China, in terms of the number of executions in the world.

At least 852 people were executed in Iran from July 2013 to June 2014, according to the latest report of the UN special rapporteur on human rights in Iran, Ahmed Shaheed.
