It is "shameful" that the United States has not yet closed down the Guantanamo Bay detention camp, the European Union's home affairs commissioner said Friday, DPA reported.
"The opinion of the European Union ... of all the institutions and member states has been stated several times in our contacts with the Americans," Cecilia Malmstrom told reporters in Brussels.
"It is shameful that it is still open and that people have not had a legal trial, and we continue to remind our American friends that it should be closed down," she said.
US President Barack Obama had pledged to close Guantanamo days after taking office in January 2009, but missed his self-imposed one-year deadline for shuttering the facility. His administration has struggled to find countries willing to take the dozens of prisoners designated for release.
Obama has also faced severe resistance from congressional lawmakers who oppose sending detainees to US soil for trials in civilian courts.
