Turkmenistan, Ukraine sign package of inter-governmental agreements

Ashgabat on Monday hosted talks between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, who arrived on a two-day official visit (Sept. 12-13), official Turkmen sources reported.

Ashgabat on Monday hosted talks between President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, who arrived on a two-day official visit (Sept. 12-13), official Turkmen sources reported.

Following the talks, a package of agreements was signed on cooperation in education between the foreign ministries, academies of sciences and culture ministries. A joint statement was also signed.

The sides discussed issues of mutual interest, in foreign policy.
On the same day, talks in expanded format and Turkmen-Ukrainian business forum were held.

"Our country attaches great importance to the development of Turkmen-Ukrainian relations, based on long-standing traditions of friendship and mutual desire of the parties to efficiently use the existing potential of cooperation for the common good" the Turkmen leader said at the last governmental meeting on the eve of the Ukrainian leader's visit.

According to Ukrainian media, in Turkmenistan, Yanukovych is planning to discuss aspects of cooperation in the energy sector, particularly the possibility of supplying Turkmen gas to Kiev. Partnership in this format had existed for many years by 2006.

The information referred to the Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov, saying that Kiev discusses the issue with Russia, through territory of which strategic communications pass.
