An underground gas storage facility will be created in case of positive drilling results at the first exploration well in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Head of SOCAR Complex Drilling Work Trust, Iskender Shirali said in an interview with Khalq gazeti newspaper.

According to him, the drilling of the first exploration well on the basis of the Nehru salt deposit has already begun in the Tumbul site.

"Creating an underground gas storage facility will create conditions for improving the stability of gas supply, and solutions for important social issues," Shirali said.

Currently, Azerbaijan has two underground gas storage facilities, Kalmaz and Garadag.

As mentioned earlier by the head of SOCAR, Rovnag Abdullayev, geological surveys are conducted by the drilling subsidiary of SOCAR in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Gas storage volumes range from 50 million to 200 million cubic meters of gas.

Creation of an underground gas storage facility in the NAR is necessary in terms of meeting the needs of the autonomous republic in gas and strengthening its energy security.
