SOCAR, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan, plans to begin construction of a gas processing plant within a new oil and gas processing and petrochemical production complex (OGPC) in September 2013, head of SOCAR Rovnag Abdullayev told journalists.

According to him, construction work will be conducted in the following order: a gas processing plant, oil refinery and in parallel, creation of facilities for petrochemical production.

Construction of a new complex worth $17 billion (including interest on bank loans) provides for construction of the petrochemical enterprise with a capacity of 1.7 million tons of finished products, an oil refinery with a capacity of primary distillation of 10 million tons per year and a gas processing plant with a capacity of 10 billion cubic meters a year. Depth of oil processing at the plant will be about 95 per cent and the output of light oil products will be 85 per cent.

In the long term, the gas processing plant's capacity will be increased to 15 billion cubic meters a year. Creation of a thermal power plant with capacity of 250 megawatts is also planned within the construction of the new complex.

The complex will be located 60 kilometres from Baku. Commissioning of the entire OGPC complex is scheduled for the end of 2020.
