Thermal power stations in Kazakhstan's Almaty to operate using gas

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Thermal power stations number 2 and 3 in Kazakhstan’s Almaty city will be switched for operation using gas in 202-2025, Trend reports with reference to Kazakh media.

The topic was discussed during a webinar of Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources.

As noted during the webinar, currently, the thermal power stations N2 accounts for annual CO2 emissions of 38,000 tons, whereas the third thermal power accounts for 12,000 tons of emissions a year.

This is the reason why the power stations are to be transitioned to operate using gas, said the report.

The corresponding tender is to be announced in October or November 2020. Next year, the money from the budget will be allocated for the development of a feasibility study, and whether the third power plant will also be transitioned to use gas is still open.

“The ministry needs to understand which fuel to use. In case coal is used, there is no place to dump ash. Therefore, the only fuel that can be used is gas,” the report said.

The feasibility study on the third thermal power plant will be developed in a year. In this case, the funding will be received in 2022, and the construction will be launched in 2023.

In turn, the feasibility study on the second thermal power plant is already being developed.
