Number of payment cards in circulation surges in Kazakhstan

The number of plastic cards in circulation amounted to 49.2 million cards as of Feb. 1, 2021 in Kazakhstan, which is 45.2 percent more than as of Feb. 1, 2020 (33.9 million cards), Trend reports with reference to Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

Of the total number of cards in circulation, 36.4 million cards were debit cards, 11.4 million cards were credit cards, and 1.44 million were other types of cards.

Furthermore, of the total number of cards in circulation, 22.1 million were used over as of Feb. 1, 2021, compared to 16.2 million cards last year, which indicates a 36.2 percent increase year-on-year.

The largest number of debit cards in circulation was registered in Almaty city (10.4 million cards). Almaty city is followed by the Turkestan region, including Shymkent city (3.8 million cards), and Nur-Sultan city (3.3 million cards).

In turn, the greatest number of credit cards also was registered in Almaty city (2.9 million cards), which also is followed by the Turkestan region (1.2 million cards) and Nur-Sultan city (1.07 million cards).

Some 39.7 million cardholders were registered in Kazakhstan as of Feb. 1, 2021, which indicates an increase of 29.6 percent year-on-year compared to 30.6 million on Feb. 1, 2020.

The total number of payment systems operating in Kazakhstan is 17, including those of the National Bank, systems of money transfers, and systems of plastic cards.
