Iran and Tajikistan agree to complete Istiqlol tunnel

Officials of Iran and Tajikistan have signed a contract on implementation of the second phase of the 'Istiqlol' tunnel's construction in Dushanbe, Trend reports via Mehr News Agency.

The Tajik officials including Tajikistan's Minister of Transportation Azim Ibrohim, Iran's ambassador, deputy of Iran's Water and Power Resources Development Company (IWPCO) attended the signing ceremony.

"We had signed contract with the Iranian side, the first stage of the tunnel construction was implemented," said Ibrohim.

"Iran has participated in implementation of many infrastructure projects in Tajikistan, including construction of water power plant and the mentioned tunnel. Today there is an opportunity for starting the second phase of the tunnel and complete this valuable gift on Tajikistan's 30th independence anniversary," said Ibrohim.

"The second stage of the project was delayed due to some reason. What is important today is that the contract has been signed and we hope this progresses further," he said.

Deputy of Iran's Water and Power Resources Development Company (IWPCO) Behrouz Moradi has called the ceremony a historic day for Iran's and Tajikistan's relations.

"Implementation of this project is another step to boost relations between the two friendly countries," he said.

"We hope the punctual implementation of the project would strengthen the relations between the two governments and Iranian companies would have effective role in operating various projects in Tajikistan," he said.
