Security forces in Saudi Arabia have killed an "al-Qaeda suspect" and arrested another after one of them opened fire at officers at a checkpoint, Press TV reported.

"Two men, one wearing a woman's all-black abaya with the face veiled, were stopped at a checkpoint in the early evening in Wadi al Dawasir, about 600 kilometers (360 miles) southeast of Riyadh," AFP quoted Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry spokesman General Mansour al-Turki as saying on Friday.

When the Saudi security guards stopped the car of the two suspects, the one who was disguised as a woman got out of the car and started shooting. He was shot dead when the guards returned fire. None of the security officers were injured and the other suspect in the car was arrested.

"We suspect them to be related to al-Qaeda," the spokesman said, adding that more investigation is needed to confirm if the two men were linked to al-Qaeda.

Saudi security officials have been involved in forming and enhancing the al-Qaeda terrorist group in its early years of formation.
