Joint Special Representative of the United Nations and League of Arab States for the Syria Lakhdar Brahimi will soon visit Damascus for talks with the government, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov told reporters on Thursday, RIA Novosti reported.
"In the near future Brahimi will visit Cairo and then leave for Damascus, to establish contacts with the Syrian authorities. If he gets some valuable, specific information on how to move the political process forward, then we are ready to get together with our American partners as we agreed in Geneva. We shall then listen to a report on the work done of Lakhdar Brahimi in order to understand and analyse and if necessary take further steps to advance the process of fulfilment of the Geneva communique," he said.
Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for a year and half.
According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria exceeds 30,000.
More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
