( dpa )- British Airways on Thursday was forced to cancel flights owing to technical problems caused by the opening of its new terminal at London's Heathrow airport.

The British airline on Thursday afternoon cancelled all domestic and short-haul flights to destinations like Brussels or Paris departing from Terminal 5 on short notice. Hundreds of passengers were affected.

"We are working hard to get people away on alternative flights," a British Airways spokesman said.

At a cost of 4.3 billion pounds (8.6 billion dollars) Terminal 5 was built exclusively for British Airways, which will eventually have all its Heathrow flights operating from the new facility.
