Iran calls for an end to shipment of arms and munitions to Syria

Iran on Tuesday called for an end to shipment of arms and munitions to Syria, IRNA reported.

Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab-African Affairs made the remarks in a meeting with special envoy of Sweden on Syria.

'In order to pave the path for Syrian-Syrian dialogue that country's borders with all its members need to be seriously controlled to prevent the entry of arms and munitions for the belligerent parties,' said Hossein Amir Abdollahian.

The Iranian deputy foreign minister appreciated the Swedish humanitarian emergency supplies to the Syrian nation and said that Iran's general policy on such countries as Syria, Iraq and Yemen is preservation of their territorial integrity, and restoration of peace and stability.

'The Islamic Republic of Iran believes that successful implementation of democracies in those countries in which the nations will be the main deciders of their political fate is the best way to ensure sustainable peace and stability in those countries,' added Amir Abdollahian.

He considered a dire necessity to pave the path for safe return of all Syrian refuges to their motherland as soon as possible and before it will get too late for acting effectively in that field.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry's special envoy on Syria Sahabon said that Iran's role in Syria is important and unique.

He said tha Stockholm supports any plan aimed to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Syria, adding that Sweden is also ready for cooperation with the UN Special Envoy on Syria Staffan de Mistura.

'As Iran has always said, the ground needs to be prepared to hold dialogue between the Syrian government and the opposition,' he added.

The Swedish special envoy meanwhile appreciated Iran's efforts aimed at restoration of peace and stability in the region.

'Sweden has been among the first contributors to the Syrian nation ever since the beginning of the crisis there and has participated actively in entire international and regional conference on Syria, calling for cooperation with the UN and other international organizations to resolve the Syrian crisis,' he added.
