National council: UN special representative’s initiative on settlement of Syrian crisis ineffectual

The Joint Special Representative of the UN and the League of Arab States for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi’s initiative to resolve the Syrian crisis has achieved no results, deputy chairman of the Syrian National Council George Sabra was quoted by Al Arabiya TV channel as saying.

The Joint Special Representative of the UN and the League of Arab States for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi's initiative to resolve the Syrian crisis has achieved no results, deputy chairman of the Syrian National Council George Sabra was quoted by Al Arabiya TV channel as saying.

"The death toll in the conflict is growing every day since Brahimi began working to resolve the crisis in Syria," Sabra said. "He is wasting time."

He said that Brahimi makes visits to different countries to negotiate with the belligerents, but there are no visible results of the negotiations.

Anti-government protests have continued in Syria for a year and half. According to UN, the total number of victims of the conflict in Syria exceeds 30,000.More than 230,000 have become refugees with around three million in need of humanitarian assistance. According to human rights activists, more than 45,000 people were killed during clashes in Syria. The Syrian authorities say they oppose the well-armed militants.
