Azerbaijani opposition agitation group submits list of places to hold demonstration

A referendum agitation group formed by Azerbaijani opposition parties could not get permission to hold demonstrations at places offered by them.

"The Baku City Administration offered us to hold a demonstration in Bibi-Heybat," Citizen and Development Party Chairman Ali Aliyev told Trend on Feb. 20.

The referendum campaign began on Feb. 18 and will end March 16 at midnight.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) decided to allot 90-minute air time at the Public Television and 90-minute - at the Public Radio.

The television will grant air time from 18:15 and radio - from 20:15.

The groups will be allotted four blocks of free airtime on public television and radio during the campaign period.

Azerbaijan will hold a referendum on March 18 to amend the Constitution.

The CEC registered the New Azerbaijan Party, Shahar, Tereggi, Huquq Va Demokratiya, Vatandash Jamiyyati, For Long-Term Development, Zaka, Movement For Karabakh and the Republic and Republicans initiative groups. The Abad Kand, Azad Soz, Azerbaijan People's Republic and Milli Istiglal initiative groups failed to pass registration.

The Azerbaijani Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.

Aliyev said that officials of the Movement for Garabag and Republic agitation group will decide to hold a demonstration at placed authorized by the city administration at a meeting on Feb. 21. "We will specify whether to hold unauthorized demonstrations at these places on Feb. 21," Aliyev said.

The Movement for Garabag and Republic was established by the Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, Citizen and Development Party, Liberal Party, Musavat, Umid, Azerbaijan Democratic Party and other public organizations.

The agitation group's parties applied to the Baku City Administration to get permission to hold a demonstration at 16:00-18:00 on Feb. 22. The appeal comprised 5 places for demonstration, including an area in front of the Narimanov cinema, an area in front of the Mashadi Azizbayov monument, Huseyn Javid square, Samad Vurgun garden and any place 200 meters of the Presidential Administration.
