Iran releases detained Indian oil tanker

Indian crude oil tanker which was detained by Iran has been released after providing assurance to Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization, ISNA news agency reported.

According to the report, the ship is free to leave Iranian waters.

Indian crude oil tanker, owned by the Shipping Corporation of India, named Desh Shanti, which was on its way to India from Iraq, was detained by Iran a few weeks ago.

Iran claimed to have detained the ship because of environmental concerns. Tehran authorities conveyed to India that the ship was polluting Iranian waters.

Head of Sea Pollution department of Iranian Environment protection organization, Nima Pourang said that the tanker discharged its oily ballast water 30 miles away from Lavan island in Persian Gulf, which caused a 10-mile length oil stain on the sea.

On August 20, Media outlets quoted Director General for Marine Safety and Environment Protection department of Ports and Maritime Organization, Mohammad Reza Ghaderi as saying, that a local court in Hormozgan Province of Iran will make a decision on detained Indian crude oil tanker.

It is confirmed that the Indian ship was polluting Iranian waters, vice president of the Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran, Ali Estiri said later in August , adding that the ship will be released under assurance.
