Azerbaijan eyes to use potential of liberated lands for fishery development

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 2

By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

The potential of the Sarsang and Sugovushan reservoirs of Azerbaijan’s Tartar and Kalbajar districts can be used for the development of the fish industry in Azerbaijan in the near future, Chairman of the Azerbaijani Association of Fish Producers and Exporters Zaur Salmanli told Trend on Dec. 2.

"It is also possible to use a cascade of reservoirs on the Araz River to develop fish farming in the country in the coming years," Salmanli added. "Azerbaijan Fish Farm is implementing several projects aimed at the development of aquaculture, including the fishery industry."

"It is advisable to use the lakes of Kalbajar district, which have favorable hydrological and hydrochemical conditions for trout breeding, for the development of aquaculture for commercial trout farming," the chairman said.

"It is necessary to stress the importance of Hakari river, which was once the main spawning river for the natural spawning of Kura salmon," Salmanli said.

The Association of Fish Producers and Exporters was established on July 23, 2019, under the Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Agriculture.
