( Worldcarfans ) - Mazda's compact MPV, the Mazda5, which has been on the market since 2005 will get a styling update for 2008. Caught during hot weather testing in the southwest U.S., the most noticeable change on this prototype is the new front end styling with a more V-shaped grille opening and a less boxy looking lower bumper. Chrome rings around the fog lights add a sporty touch. Headlights have also been redesigned, with the new clear plastic lens protruding slightly beyond the contours of the sheet metal. At the rear, the tail lights now use LED's for the brake lights. Wheels have also been changed from the plain 5-spoke design to a more sporty 17-inch design.
Engine is still the 2.3 liter 4-cylinder making 153 horsepower, but the optional automatic transmission is upgraded from a 4-speed to a new 5-speed design which improves gas mileage. Standard transmission continues to be a 5-speed manual on the Sport and Touring models. Automatic is standard on the Grand Touring model.
