BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 30. Cargo transit through Iranian roads and railways rose by 37 percent in the first nine months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through December 21, 2023), compared to the same period last year, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Shahriar Afandizadeh said, Trend reports.
Afandizadeh stated that about 11.1 million tons of cargo were transited via the roads and railways of the country within 9 months.
Of the mentioned amount, 3.48 million tons were crude oil and petroleum products, representing a 77.3 percent increase from the same period the previous year, the deputy minister said.
Meanwhile, 7.59 million tons accounted for non-oil products, showing an increase of 24.1 percent compared with the same period last Iranian year, he added.
Afandizadeh also noted that 9.96 million tons of goods were transited via Iran's roads and 1.11 million tons via the country’s railways. This is an increase of 39.3 percent and 5.37 percent, respectively, compared to the same period last year.
Currently, there are 2,793 km of controlled-access highways, 45,170 km of highways, and freeways in operation in Iran.
The length of railway lines in Iran is currently 14,984 kilometers. At present, 978 locomotives, 29,305 freight wagons, and 2,153 passenger wagons are in operation on Iran's railways.
