BAKU, Azerbaijan, Mar.22. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) provided technical assistance to Uzbekistan’s National Food Security and Nutrition Strategy (FSN), CPF Monitoring and Resource Mobilization Specialist of FAO Representation in Uzbekistan Nozima Malikova told Trend.

"FAO Uzbekistan Country Office assisted with research and later provided consolidated feedback from FAO's technical experts' pool and other UN agencies in Uzbekistan", Malikova said.

According to her, the draft National FSN Strategy was developed by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan with technical assistance from the European Union (EU). The Strategy was based on FAO's Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security, it also drew from CFS Voluntary Guidelines on Food Systems and Nutrition. "The Strategy has been adapted into a draft Presidential Resolution on National FSN Strategy for 2023-2030, which is being reviewed by relevant government institutions. The date of adoption of this Resolution is not certain yet", she added.

The FAO’s specialist informed that the Strategy has not been yet adopted so the implementation of the measures has not started yet. However, the Strategy is aimed at implementing the Food Systems approach, which shifts the understanding of food security as availability of wheat and energy sufficiency to a broader concept by strengthening the role of sustainable and quality agri-food production, market interventions, as well as social protection, nutrition, behavioral change, and other comprehensive matters.

"The overall aim of the draft FSN Strategy is to ensure that all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life", Malikova said.

In addition, she said that the strategy will be implemented across all regions of Uzbekistan.
