Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend . K.Zarbaliyva / Ramazan Burjayev , the Chairman of the Board of the Supreme Court on Court Martial, announced that a program on Technical Assistance to Witness Protection is planned to be carried out. The project will be financed by the Austrian Government through the European Union. The Law on the Protection of people participating in the legal process of the Azerbaijan Republic stipulated different measures, however it has not yet been necessary for actions to be taken.
The mentality removed the necessity of applying such measures. "The Government considers the witness protection program, to be of a high importance. Any measures targeting the protection of a witness should be taken at the resolution of the country," Burjayev stressed. He particularly noted that so far no sentence has been issued to take measures specified by the law.
The law on the Protection of people participating in the legal process, dated the 11th of December 1998 was highly appreciated by UN experts. During the project, Azerbaijan's experience in this sphere will be studied by UN experts. In case it is necessary, the legislation in this sphere will be improved.
The law on the Protection of people participating in the legal process, dated 1998, included supplements on the 24th of November 2002 and the 5th of March 2004.
