Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Tuesday with the key Nikkei index down 1.35 percent.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average shed 104.66 points to 7,645.51, hitting a new low since October 28, 2008.
The broader Topix index lost 13.57 points, or 1.76 percent, to 756.53,
