An international blueprint competition for architects will be announced in Kazakhstan for plans for the EXPO-2017 site, Prime Minister Serik Akhmetov said at a board meeting of Samruk-Kazyna Kazakhstan National Welfare Fund.

"A competition has to be held for the "green area". National Company Astana EXPO-2017 will hold an international competition for the master plan of the territory of 125 hectares in mid-February," Serik Akhmetov said.

He said 30 of the world's leading architects will take part in the competition.

As head of the Cabinet of Ministers noted, work on the design will be launched following the competition.

"This year, we have to announce tenders for contract work. Not everyone understands what a "green area" is, even we don't. Therefore, ideas and international experience are needed, "the Prime Minister said.

He noted that upon presidential request it is necessary to attract the best professionals, including foreign ones.

"This matter will be put on the board, and the government will then make a decision," the Prime Minister said.

The international specialized exhibition EXPO 2017 will be held in Astana. "Energy for the future" will be the theme of the exhibition. A special national company was established for holding the exhibition at a high level.

EXPO has held since 1851. The International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE, Bureau International des Expositions) was created in 1928, which is the primary authority for registering world exhibitions.
