EU, Turkmenistan mull ways of diversification of hydrocarbon supplies

A meeting with Peter Burian, EU special representative for Central Asia has been held in the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan, the message from Turkmen government said.

Burian is on a working visit to Ashgabat.

"Talking about the prospects for cooperation in the energy sphere, the sides noted the importance of Turkmenistan's international initiatives on diversification of hydrocarbon supplies," the message said.

They also emphasized the importance of strengthening the legal framework and the practical implementation of the agreements by working out a joint action plan to improve the cooperation, according to the government message.

Turkmenistan ranks fourth in the world for the volume of natural gas reserve after Russia, Iran and Qatar, according to the company report of BP. Turkmenistan's largest fields are located in the Mary province in the country's east.

Currently, Turkmenistan has the opportunity to export natural gas to China, Iran and Russia. The Trans-Caspian gas pipeline across the Caspian Sea to Europe through Azerbaijan and the TAPI gas pipeline are among the pipelines planned to run from Turkmenistan.

The natural gas production in Turkmenistan exceeded 76 billion cubic meters, while the import surpassed 45 billion cubic meters in 2014.
