International Atomic Energy Agency chief talks JCPOA

The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stressed that it is essential to have a deal with Iran because Iran has a very big, ambitious, sophisticated, developed nuclear program.

“We are flying blind without Iran’s nuclear deal,” IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi said calling reaching a deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran as a need, Trend reports citing Axios.

Responding as to whether he believes Iran has an active nuclear weapons program, Grossi says that "No, there is no information indicating that at the moment."

He went on to raise concerns about Iran's stepped-up enrichment combined with the international community's reduced visibility in recent months.

"I wouldn't go into the analysis of individual political stances of countries but it is obvious and this has been said publicly," Grossi said, though he acknowledged there was an "opaqueness" when it came to Israel's nuclear program. "But some leaders in this region [have said] that the presence of a new nuclear arsenal would trigger a nuclear arms race in the region."

"When you enrich Uranium at 60 percent, you are very close [to nuclear weapon],” he said. “It's technically indistinguishable from weapons-grade material. So when you combine this with the fact that our inspection access is being curtailed, then I start to worry."
