Baku, Azerbaijan, May 30
By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Iran has imported turbines for its first geothermal power plant from Italy , said Hamid Molouki, the consultant to the project's manager.

The geothermal power plant will be established in the northwestern city of Meshkin Shahr , and will start electricity generation within less than two years, Iran 's Mehr news agency quoted Molouki as saying on May 30.

Turbines which are used in geothermal power plants can tolerate temperatures of up to 250 Celsius , he said, adding that such turbines are not manufactured inside the country.

Preliminary studies for establishing the power plant started 10 years ago and an appropriate location has been found in the northwestern city of Meshkin Shahr , he noted.
Geothermal electricity is electricity generated from geothermal energy. Technologies in use include dry steam power plants, flash steam power plants and binary cycle power plants.

Yousef Rashidi, an official at Iran 's Department of Environment, said in September 2014 that Iran plans to generate 5 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy by 2015.

"Currently, 300-350 megawatts of renewable energy is produced in the country."

Iran's electricity generation capacity is currently 68,932 megawatts, of which 57,541 megawatts is generated by thermal power plants, 9,686 megawatts is generated by hydroelectric power plants, 1,020 megawatts is generated by nuclear power plants, 466 megawatts is generated by distributed generation power plants, and 219 megawatts is generated by renewable energy power plants.
