Iran to increase legumes production

It is forecasted that the production of legumes in Iran will increase by 21 percent over the current Iranian year (starting March 20, 2020), compared to the same period last Iranian year, Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Iran’s Grains and Essential Goods Department Faramak Aziz Karimi said, Trend reports citing the ministry.

According to him, 849,000 tons of legumes will be grown in Iran in the current Iranian year.

The director general added that the cultivation area of legumes in Iran in the current Iranian year decreased by 3 percent compared to the last Iranian year. Thus, if legumes were planted on 841,000 hectares of land in the last Iranian year, this figure is 818,000 hectares in the current year.

Aziz Karimi stressed that it is planned to be harvested 2.38 tons of legumes per hectare of land.

"The legumes are grown in autumn in many provinces of Iran but autumn cultivation is preferred mainly in the western, north-western and north-eastern provinces of Iran," he said.

The director general noted that the most amount of peas are grown in Kermanshah, Lorestan, Kurdistan, East Azerbaijan, and West Azerbaijan provinces of Iran.

Aziz Karimi also said that in addition, the lentil is mainly grown in Ardabil, Lorestan, Qazvin, North Khorasan provinces of Iran, while the bean is in Fars, Lorestan, Zanjan, and Markazi provinces.
