BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 22. The Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) will enhance energy competitiveness of Greece and wider region, Trend quoted Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Costas Skrekas as saying.

“At a time when dramatic developments in Ukraine have triggered the most serious geopolitical crisis in recent decades in Europe, IGB is a project that promotes energy security in the region. It establishes the role of our country as a gas transit hub for Southeastern Europe and upgrades the region geopolitically. In the face of fragile international circumstances, we are strengthening Greece's energy competitiveness and creating new export prospects. Combined with the completion by the end of the year of the new electrical interconnection of the two countries, the project marks a new era of enhanced and multidimensional energy cooperation between Greece and Bulgaria,” he said.

The IGB project is of key importance for increasing security of supply and for ensuring diversification of natural gas sources for Bulgaria and the region of Southeast Europe. At the regional level, IGB will provide access to the gas transmission network for Bulgarian municipalities and regions that didn’t have an option for connectivity. The interconnector with Greece is an entirely new route for the transmission of natural gas to Europe and will give Bulgaria and the region access to supplies from new sources. The project will connect the country with the Southern Gas Corridor and has excellent synergy with other major energy projects such as TAP, TANAP, EastMed and the LNG terminal at Alexandroupolis.
