Iran has signed memorandum of understanding with four domestic companies and one Chinese company that would invest about $5.9 billion in Shahid Rajaei Port, said Minister of Road and Urban Development of Iran Mohammad Eslami, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Road and Urban Development website.
"One of the targets of this memorandum of understanding is to accelerate the logistics capacity and transforming Shahid Rajaei port into a third generation port," said Eslami.
"Transforming Shahid Rajaei port and other ports into third generation ports would create economic and trade benefits and we aim for competition among the country's ports and create sustainable export and reduces the finished price of commodities," he said.
"At the moment 2,400 hectares of new lands have been added to Shahid Rajaei port to implement trade development plans there. That is an important step reached by signing memorandum of understanding," he said.
"The trade development in other ports are part of the ministry's plans, total capacities of ports are currently at 280 million tons that should be doubled in five years and it is expected that the capacity of ports in Makran coast reaches 220 million tons," he said.
