BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 19. Total cargo transportation increased in Azerbaijan from January through September 2022, Trend reports on October 19 via Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee.

According to the committee, this figure amounted to 157.6 million tons, up by 12.3 percent on annual basis.

The committee also said that in the first nine months of this year, 57.1 percent of all cargo was transported by road, 30.5 percent by pipeline, 8.6 percent by rail, 3.6 percent by sea, and 0.2 percent by air.

During this period, cargo transportation in the private sector increased by 12.3 percent compared to 9M2021. The share of this sector in the total volume of cargo transportation was 77.9 percent.

Meanwhile, passenger traffic in Azerbaijan exceeded 1.16 billion people, which is a growth of 38.9 percent in annual terms. Most of the passengers (87 percent) were transported by motor vehicles, 12.6 percent by metro, and 0.4 percent by other modes of transport.

Cargo transportation by rail from January through September 2022 equaled 13.6 million tons (an increase of 23.7 percent), and passenger transportation – 3.3 million people (up by 91.5 percent).

Over 5.6 million tons of cargo were transported by sea during the reporting period, which is 39 percent more than from January through September 2021. The share of oil in the total volume of cargo transportation was 40.8 percent.

At the same time, the volume of cargo handled in the ports of Azerbaijan exceeded 8.6 million tons, of which 8.04 million tons (92.7 percent) were transit cargo. The volume of cargo in the ports amounted to 321,000 tons as of October 1, 2022.

A total of 90 million tons of cargo were transported by road in the first nine months, which is 11.9 percent more than from January through September 2021, and passenger transportation by this type of transport amounted to over one million people (an increase of 27.1 percent over the year).

The Baku Metro carried 146.7 million passengers (up by 3.8 times) during the reporting period.

Meanwhile, over 1.6 million passengers were transported by air, which is 2.1 times more than in 9M2021. Cargo transportation by air for the year decreased by 8.6 percent to 325,000 tons.
