Turkey's former consul in Mosul, Iraq, Ozturk Yilmaz, who was for 101 days held captive by the militants of terrorist organization 'Islamic State' (IS), has been appointed ambassador to Tajikistan, the Milliyet newspaper reported Apr. 11.

On 19 June, 2014, some 49 Turkish diplomatic mission staff in Mosul were taken hostage by the IS militants. The hostages were freed after 101 days in a special operation of the Turkish intelligence.

The 'Islamic State' (IS, formerly ISIL or ISIS) penetrated Syria's territory in 2013. The organization said at the time it refuses to take the oath of Al-Qaeda and declared 'a holy war' against all groups and government forces in Syria.

Strengthening of the IS in Syria allowed it to return to Iraq, deploying military actions against government forces there.

In late June of 2014, the IS announced about the creation of the 'Islamic Caliphate' on the territories under its control in Iraq and Syria. In turn, Iraqi authorities asked the international community for help in fighting the IS.
