Russia, Iraq discuss bilateral cooperation

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed bilateral cooperation between Russia and Iraq with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki via telephone, RIA Novosti reported with reference to the Kremlin's press service.

"The two sides exchanged views on topical issues of bilateral cooperation. In particular, the sides stressed the importance of implementing agreements reached during Nouri al-Maliki's visit to Russia in October 2012," the press-release said.

During his visit to Moscow in October, al-Maliki signed a package agreement on military-technical cooperation worth $4.2 billion. Later in October, the head of Iraqi Cabinet agreed with Czech authorities to purchase 28 L-159 combat training airplanes worth one billion dollars. Later, a number of Iraqi government officials made contradictory statements regarding this deal. Al-Maliki's spokesman said the deal was terminated due to corruption, whereas Defense Minister Sadun al-Dulaymi refuted this information.
