Iranian oil minister reveals volume of coke to be produced

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 11

By Elnur Baghishov - Trend:

Iran’s Bandar Abbas and Shazand oil refineries will produce about 700,000 tons of coke (needle coke and sponge coke) per year, Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said, Trend reports referring to the Shana news agency.

Zanganeh made the remark at a signing ceremony of an agreement between the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company and the Iranian Mines and Mining Industries Development and Renovation Organization (IMIDRO) on the production of needle coke and sponge coke at Bandar Abbas and Shazand refineries.

With the construction of coke production facilities in Bandar Abbas and Shazand oil refineries, 620,000 tons of sponge coke and 70,000 tons of needle coke will be produced per year, the minister noted.

The Iranian minister said that both of these refineries operate on fuel oil that is turned into valuable products. For example, fuel oil worth $300-$400 is processed into needle coke worth thousands of dollars, Zanganeh added.

The minister said that about $1 billion will be invested in the coke production project.

“The project is expected to be commissioned in about three years,” Zanganeh said.
