Georgia reveals reasons for increase in diesel imports to country

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec.6

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions that led to a reduction in fuel consumption in Georgia, fuel imports into the country increased in the first 11 months of this year, mainly due to increased imports of diesel fuel, Trend reports citing the Trend reports via the Union of Oil Importers.

As for the increase in imports of diesel fuel, this, in turn, is associated with the following:

• State program of incentives for agricultural landowners;
• Increase in the number of transit trucks in Georgia - (by 16.4 percent in January-October 2020);
• At the current stage, the sale of unregistered diesel fuel by the relevant structures in the country is significantly limited;
• Implementation of large-scale infrastructure works in the country;
• Companies building up fuel reserves throughout the year at low world prices.

Some 1.004 million tons of gasoline and diesel fuel were imported to Georgia from January through November of this year.

As reported, imports of gasoline and diesel fuel increased by 12,300 tons or 1.2 percent compared to the same period last year (11 months of 2019 - 992,5 00 tons). Imports of gasoline decreased during this period and diesel fuel increased.

From January through November, imports of gasoline fuel to Georgia amounted to 493,700 tons. Decrease compared to the same period last year is 8,200 tons, or 1.6 percent (11 months of 2019 - 501,900 tons). Import of diesel fuel is 511,100 tons, which is 20,500 tons, or 4.2 percent more than last year. (11 months of 2019 - 490,600 tons).
