BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 17. Romania has an agreement with Azerbaijan on gas supplies in an effort to diversify energy sources, Romanian media reports citing sources.
Reportedly, at the moment, only Turkey's agreement for gas transit is awaited, Trend reports.
Romania depends on Turkey for supplies through the Trans-Balkan pipeline, but also on Greece and Bulgaria – for the completion of the delayed Vertical Gas Corridor project.
Earlier, Romanian Minister of Energy Virgil-Daniel Popescu told Trend that his country wants to import the whole volume of its gas needs from Azerbaijan.
“We have a total consumption of 11 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. We have been producing 8 billion cubic meters per year and now we have started offshore production in the Black Sea, which adds 1 billion cubic meters. We still need to import 2 billion cubic meters, so we have to find a solution. Azerbaijani gas is one of possible solutions for us, we hope to reach an agreement with the Azerbaijani government. If it is possible, we want to import the whole volume of our gas needs from Azerbaijan. We are in negotiations and when we finish, we will announce it. But we are on the right track,” he explained.
Azerbaijan’s gas exports to Europe began on December 31, 2020 with the commissioning of the Southern Gas Corridor comprising of the South Caucasus Pipeline Expansion, the Trans Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP).
