BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 25. The energy corridor project implemented by Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania, and Hungary to transmit “green” electricity from the Caspian Sea region to Europe will serve Europe's energy security, and Serbia is scrutinizing this important initiative, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Mining and Energy of Serbia Stefan Srbljanović said, Trend reports.
He made the statement at the 8th session of the Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) on Trade and Economic Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Serbia in Baku.
Continuing the topic, Azerbaijani co-chairman of the IGC Sahil Babayev did not exclude that Serbia will purchase “green” energy from Azerbaijan soon and a relevant agreement may be prepared.
“'Green' energy is a very important area for cooperation. In this context, the establishment of the green energy corridor “Caspian-Azerbaijan-Georgia-Europe through the Black Sea” is of great importance. This corridor is designed to supply 4 GW of green energy to Europe from Azerbaijan. There are agreements with Romania and Hungary, and preliminary negotiations have been held with Serbia on this issue,” Babayev told reporters following the IGC.
According to him, the feasibility study of this project will be finalized in the second half of this year, after which “final decisions will be made”.
“Azerbaijan's green energy potential is very large, it exceeds 150 GW (offshore wind energy estimate). I hope that soon we and Serbia will agree on green energy projects, which is reflected in the Protocol on the results of the IGC meeting signed in Baku. Azerbaijan is still a supplier of traditional energy resources to the Serbian market, but it can become a supplier of “green” energy,” the Azerbaijani minister added.
