Iran announces capacity of its northern and southern ports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 8

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The annual capacity of Iran's northern and southern ports amounts to 240 million tons at present, Deputy Chairman of the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) Farhad Montaser Koohsari said, Trend reports citing the organization’s website.

The deputy chairman noted that the capacity of Anzali port is 6.13 million tons, Amirabad port - 7.5 million tons and Noshahr port - 2.8 million tons at present. In general, the capacity of Iran's northern ports is more than 27 million tons. The PMO is implementing a number of plans. Upon completion of these plans, the capacity of loading and unloading operations in northern ports will increase.

Koohsari added that the capacity of Shahid Rajaee port in the southern Iran is 108 million tons, Imam Khomeini port - 60 million tons, Bushehr port - 9 million tons, Chabahar port - 8.5 million tons and Khorramshahr port - 4 million tons.

“In general, the main reason for the decrease in cargo movements in Iranian ports in the current Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 to March 21, 2020) is the decline in world trade due to the spread of the coronavirus pandemic,” he said.

The official emphasized that of course, Iran's trade through ports is estimated to be increased with the tightening of control over the coronavirus pandemic and the lifting of sanctions against Iran.

The volume of cargo loaded and unloaded in Iranian ports in the 9th month of the current Iranian year (November 21-December 20, 2020) decreased by 18.8 percent compared to the same month last Iranian year.

So, a total of 9.13 million tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded in Iranian ports in the 9th month.
