COVID-19 boosts pharmaceuticals production volumes in Kazakhstan

The pharmaceutical output increased by 45 percent in Kazakhstan over the period from Jan. through Nov. 2020 having amounted to 125 billion tenge ($297.6 million) as compared to the same period of 2020, Trend reports citing Kazakhstan’s Ministry of industry and Infrastructural Development.

The output volume increased by 39.5 percent during the reporting period of 2020, which is associated with an increase in demand for pharmaceuticals due to the measures to battle COVID-19 infection in the country. The increase is also due to the increase in of production of drugs for treatment of multiple sclerosis, cancer and diabetes mellitus at Karaganda Pharmaceutical Complex LLP.

The participation of local manufacturers in public procurement within the guaranteed volume of free medical care and the conclusion of long-term contracts for the supply of drugs and medical devices for 7-10 years also promoted significant increase in output volumes of Kazakhs-produced medicine.

To date, 88 long-term contracts have been signed with 36 local manufacturers for the supply of 5,014 items of medicines and medical devices within the guaranteed volume of free medical care.
