BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. The Tajikistan Glaciers 2025 national pavilion at COP29 was officially opened with the participation of Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon, Trend reports.
At the World Leaders Climate Action Summit in Baku, President Rahmon highlighted Tajikistan's vulnerability to climate change and underscored the country's key role as a member of the High-Level Panel on Climate and Water. He also presented his initiative to declare a "Year of Glaciers' Preservation", a proposal that was embraced by the United Nations General Assembly with strong support from the international community.
As part of the resolution, the "World Day of Glaciers" was also proclaimed, and a Trust Fund for Glacier Protection was established under the auspices of the United Nations.
Looking ahead, an international high-level conference is planned to be held in Dushanbe in May of 2025.
To note, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened on November 11 at the Baku Olympic Stadium.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
