The Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry raised claims in the amount of 540 manat against 18 institutions for air pollution by motor vehicles and imposed fines worth 1,250 manat in August, the ministry reported. August was declared 'Clean Air' month in Baku
The ministry and the Baku State Traffic Police carried out raids under the 'Clean Air' month. The inspections held in the motor pool of the State Caspian Shipping Company revealed five vehicles spewing exhaust fumes exceeding the permitted limit, in the State Land and Cartography Committee - four, in the Koryu-Bina Tikinti LLC- nine, in the Baki Yukdashima Negliyat - three, in the Gum Adası OGPU and in the PU Azneft transport workshop - seven. The relevant claims were filed against these institutions to pay fines for the environmental damage.
The purpose of the event is to ensure the requirements of the law "On protection of the atmosphere" and examine the current state of air pollution in Baku, as well as to determine the level of harm done to the environment and human health by emission of pollutants from transport vehicles and impose a ban on the use of such vehicles.
Azerbaijan declared 2010 the Year of Ecology.
