Azerbaijan, Baku, August 17 / Trend J. Babayeva /

The first Azerbaijani expedition has set off for Mount Kilimanjaro.

A scientific and sport expedition headed by the Minister of Environment and Natural Resources and President of the Air and Extreme Sports Federation, Huseyn Bagirov, left Baku on August 11. The expedition made its way from the city of Arusha in Tanzania to the Uhuru peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the official website for the Air and Extreme Sports Federation said.

The expedition is held under the slogan 'Azerbaijan reaching new heights together with Ilham'.

Kilimanjaro is a mountain range in the north-east of Tanzania. It is the highest place in Africa (5,895 m). The highest peak is Uhuru on the volcano Kibo, which is one of the 'seven summits' of the world. Due to the fact Kilimanjaro is so close to the equator, a person climbing to the height passes through all climatic zones.

It is the second long-term expedition organized by the Air and Extreme Sports Federation. Before, an expedition was conducted in the Antarctica. The delegation set off for the expedition on December 24, 2008, headed by the President of the Federation, Huseyn Bagirov.

The expedition, consisting of scientists and sportsmen, has a scientific, sport, political and symbolic significance. The mountain sports national team is included in its staff (on behalf of the Extreme Sports Federation) and the Heads of the Federation's Clubs 'Salavat' Ilgar Israfilov, 'A+A' Adil Farajullayev, and the Federation physician and mountain sportsman, Eldar Alekperov, are participating in the expedition.

The famous mountain sportsman, Yagub Aleskerov, was invited by the Azerbaijani Mountaineering Federation to be included in the team's staff upon the proposal of the Air and Extreme Sports Federation.

Specialist biologist, Azerchin Muradov (Deputy Director for Science of Ilisu Reserve of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources), and the Federation's activist and operator, Teymur Najafzade, were also included in the expedition.
